The national park of Lopé is located in the Ogooué Ivindo province. It’s registered in the UNESCO World Heritage since 2007 as a natural and cultural mixed site. It covers 4970 km2.

An emblematic site

Some small islands of savannas aged of more than 40 000 years are crossed by forestry galleries of Pleistocene full of endemic plants.

Within the park can be found the Brazza Mount and the highest densities of mammals that can be met in a rainforest.

Three elephants can be met per square kilometer: The best record in Africa. But we can also find a great number of gorillas and families. 412 species of birds have been listed. The national Park of La Lopé is famous worldwide for its exceptional mandrills. More than a thousand of mandrills have been listed in a single group (1350 mandrills listed in 1996): that is the highest record of primates (expect men). Those recent years, the most important scientific information about monkeys came out from la Lopé. It is the same thing concerning research upon to gorillas and the elephants of the forest.

Those 5000km2 of savannas and forest record about fifty kinds of mammals such as elephants and buffaloes. It also has archeological treasures: rock carvings existing from the Iron Period (2000 years) and other signs of human occupation aged of more than 400.000years.

A major archeological site in Africa

The valley of Ogooué is a rich prehistoric sanctuary. It is one of the most ancient archeological sites in Central Africa, where arrowhead marks old from the Iron Age, rock carvings signs aged from the Stone Age and other human occupational signs dating more than 400.000 years can be observed. Some prehistorically remaining villages, research scientific items are still visible on the top of the mountains in the savannas and enable the visitors to tour back in time.

The national park of la Lopé is a wonderful site for making research in the forest. The Gorilla and Chimpanzee Study Station (CGS) is a developing training Center that has risen to fame the site in the scientific world.

The park is not a mere reserve of flora and fauna. It’s also a prehistorically vestige. The Ogooué valley where the parc is located is a rich prehistorical sanctuary. Thanks to the archeological excavation, you will see the prehistorically signs and the rock paintings from the Iron Age. This site will enable you to observe the other humans occupational signs that dates back 40 000 years ago. Go for a tour, and you will enjoy the ancient villages.
