The shelter of the spirits

The Tsogho people considered themselves as being the founders of the Bwiti Religion. They keep the mysterious secrets of the forest and their rituals show a link with the nature. Paul du Chaillu, one of the first explorers of the region, has gathered nomadic hunters and handpickers and habits of that region, as well as their symbolic links with other ethnic groups.

The Ngounié river is home of calm environment. From the North of the Ogooué river constitutes a calm inspiration, that particularity has contributed to the emergence of a new concept “The Life Moral Codes reverence” or “L’ethique de la révérence pour la vie” by Doctor Albert Schweitzer, 1915.
Cultural tourism, one of the main touristic market, can then rely on the spiritual strength of the National Park of Waka people and its neighbors, since the steep landscape has help preserved the park from any human aggression, leading thus to a paradise of biodiversity.

The park is a refuge of more than 1500 plant species, around 85 mammals, more than 400 bird species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians.

The Wildlife of the National Park

Many species in the national park of Waka are so important for the preservation at the global level.
The most important animals of the Waka National Park are undoubtedly primates and elephants , but it is also a refuge for a great diversity of species from the tropical forests from Central Africa.

Broadly speaking, 29 species of big mammals have been listed in the park, that is: 8 primates, 9 artydactyles, 5 carnivorous and 7 others. Three out of those species are classified among the most threaten species of Africa (G. gorilla, P. troglodytes and C. satanas) (Abitsi 2006). The distribution of species is rather regular in the Park, with a little concentration of monkeys in the center and at west side , and a low rate reduced in the North East. The rate of meeting the large monkeys ( Gorillas et Chimpanzees) are among the highest of the 13 National Park network of Gabon.

Other species have been studied such as butterfly, (Geal Vande Weghe) and spiders (Wayne Madison) , that gives interesting data in terms of specific diversity. Small mammals , herpetofauna, avifauna and the marin fauna remain totally unexplored now.
