An intact tropical forest

The National Park of Ivindo created in 2002, is located in the East-Center of Gabon straddling the provinces of Ogooué-Ivindo and Ogooué-Lolo with 3000 km2. Almost uninhabited nature there remains wild and intact. It is crossed by the Equator and houses the falls of Kongou aswell as the “Langoué Bai”, one of the five largest forest clearings in Africa where we found the largest concentration of gorillas in Gabon.

A park with an incalculable wealth

Most of the Park is composed of very old forests and undisturbed by man. There are impressive waterfalls ,particularly along the Ivindo and the Djidji, which are sequenced by a succession of rapids and waterfalls. Kongouand Mingouli falls are all part of the largest and the most beautiful waterfalls in Central Africa.

The national park wildlife

Most of the Park is covered with very old-growth forests and undisturbed by man. They are home to an exceptionally rich biodiversity, especially in terms of insects. Bird life includes more than 350 species. The Park is a laboratory for speciation, in terms of Entomological as for fish. The Park is also one of the last intact populations of forest elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. The northern part of the Ivindo national park includes the wilderness of Ipassa (Makokou) where is installed the research station of the Institute of research in tropical ecology (IRET) active since the end of the 1960s. This Reserve is part of the global network of Biosphere (MAB) Reserves since 1983.
