The Park of Moukalaba DOUDOU is one of the thirteenth national parks of Gabon located in the south-east of that country. The site has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage on October 20th.2005.

This park is famous for its various habitats, cold forest, montains with papyrus swamps , rivers from the lagoon Ndogo with grassy savannah hosting unique species. Hundreds of elephants frequently gather in the middle of papyrus in the dry season.

The abundance in terms of primate and giant monkeys in that park would make that place one of the best sites of Africa for observing gorillas from the rainforest. In terms of density, the number of gorillas is higher there than anywhere else in Gabon. The traditional Punu’s culture taboo which forbid hunting gorillas and chimpanzees could be a major advantage for the implementation of Nature Tourism.

That region is also a place of refuge of migratory birds (shallows, stork) from Cobe of Vassa, hippopotamus and elephants. This mountainous area is a real shield against predators, as a result , the elephant population is always higher.

An execeptional universal value

The archeological digs realized in the area of MPANZA prove that ceramic activities are performed in that region. Then we also notice the sanctuaries on which ancestral beliefs and structures are based, and on which people from that region are tied, that’s why they preserve those sacred places.

Moreover, refuge places found in Moukalaba DOUDOU, exemplify the historical testimony of a famous national character, Mavouroulou ( also known as Nyonda Makita) , main character known for his resistance to the European Colonial introduction . The colonial post of Bongo is also identified in the area as a major historical site.

Good to know

During your journey in Moukalaba DouDou , activities on site don’t present any difficulties. However, a good physical condition is required because daily walking session varies between 4 to 6 hours. The landscape is relatively flat , even though you are at the Mont Doudou feet, part of the montaignous massif of the Mayombe chain.

The National park wildlife

There is a succession of the forests in the evolutive height line, alternated by a large space of the shrubby Savannah completing the view of hills covered by a bed of trees. This is the beautiful face of the landscape of Moukalaba Doudou.

The concentration of endemic flora is of high concentration in the mont Doudou. Here is the field of migratory birds such as shallows, storks etc …..That place is where Cobe, fassa hippopotamus and elephants live . In the same place we also notice the presence of papyrus vegetation
