Pongara, located near the main Gabonese City where having more people than the others, remains a wild place. The mangroves contain hundreds of young fish and prawns. Beaches are favorite place for eggs laying for turtles. In its forest we can find small monkeys, buffaloes, cephalothins, and even some chimpanzees and elephants, some surfer hippopotamus in the south park area. In the savannah, we can find many species of flowers, insects and birds. In the marshes, there are so many fish, whereas in the ocean there, we can notice turtles and dolphins are living together.

Good to know

Coming from Pointe Denis’s side, you will enjoy an incredibly stirring and unforgotten experience in the National Park of Pongara. When entering in the depths of the forest that directly borders the beach, it’s possible to encounter an incredible rich biodiversity. You will find so many monkeys as well as snakes and other reptiles. If you are lucky, you can find elephants, buffaloes and even Panthers on your way. But the most stirring experience is on the beach itself. Each year, around November and February the beach becomes the eggs laying place of the turtles. When strolling in the night, you will see turtles making nest for eggs laying. This is a rare occasion, and if you are lucky to attend to the spectacle you will be more than happy.

The Wildlife of the National Park

In terms of Fauna index, the ocean, the oceanic beach, the mangroves, the lagoons, savannah ,the coastal and rainy forests each one bears specific animals and plants species.
Apart from the common great animals encountered in abundance according to the different seasons ( buffaloes and elephants) , it is the best place to see turtles laying eggs. We can find mainly turtles (Dermohelys coriacea) , which is easy to see in a suitable season ( between October and February ) . Out of that species, but seldom, we can also see imbricated tortoises ( (Eretmochelys imbricata), green tortoises(Chelonia mydas) and olive greenish tortoises(Lepidochelys olivace). More discreet and more important they may be, the world of insects, birds, reptiles and plants is also fascinating.
