Birougou national park is a protected natural area located in the South of Gabon, in between Ngounie and Ogooué-Lolo provinces. It borders of the Republic of Congo.
Favorite place for exploration and research
Located in the heart of the Massif of Du Chaillu, source of many rivers, the park consists of more rugged hills of 800 meters above sea level. It includes a large number of plant and animal species, some of which are endemic.
Having been relatively studied a few bit, it was discovered only in 1984. In this area, the presence of a primates was previously unknown to science: the Monkey tail of Sun is the endemic specie in this national park.
This site is also a habitat reference for small biodiversity composed of birds, small mammals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians.
An endemic specie in gabon
The Sun-tailed Guenon is a primate belonging to the subfamily of the Cercopithecinae and the the lhoestichthoniidae. It is endemic to Gabon and was discovered only recently in 1984 by Mike Harrison. Due to its discreet attitude and its cryptic appearance it is difficult to observe it in the wild and therefore remains little known. It is located in the massif of Du Chaillu in the Lopé and Mont Birougou national parks.

The wildlife of the park
The National Park of Mont Birougou conceals an extraordinary diversity of ecosystems, ranging from marshy forests to mountain forests. Waterfalls and Rapids which attest its watercourses bed made of a characteristic ichthyological fauna of these specific areas. One should take into account the riches of its avifauna and the conservation in this site, which is recognized as a very important habitat for gorillas (Gorillagorila), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), the Buffalo (Synceruscaffer), elephants (Loxodontaafricana). The bambisto white paws (Cephalophusogilbicrysalbum).
