Ogooué-Maritime is one of the nine provinces of Gabon, the eighth one in alphabetical order, and the second in terms of population. Its capital is Port -Gentil, the economic capital of the country. The province of Ogooué-Maritime is located in the West of the country, it is washed by the Gulf of Guinea. .

A high rate of endemism

The province is home to a string of extremely rich fauna reserves. We find in the parks diverse flora adapted to wet lands, but also a fauna essentially composed of insects, birds, amphibians’ reptiles and fish.
The Ogooué-Maritime countryside, is sparsely populated and it its difficult to access inside. It has a rich fauna composed of many species: chimpanzees, hippos, duikers, antelopes, red river hogs, pangolins, crocodiles, monitor lizards, manatees, turtles-leatherback.The lagoons are birds milieu (weavers, ibis tantalum, kingfishers, Knights, storks, pelicans, eagles,…) of the privileged sites that they fly over constantly in search of food.

The BWITI rite

Among the many traditional esoteric beliefs in Gabon, Bwiti is plays several roles : a cult, a philosophy, an initiatory teaching and therapy (both physical and psychological).
“Bwiti practice is reserved for males and it allows them to access the other world, to get in touch with spiritual entities.” The insiders of the Bwiti communicate with these spiritual beings as a result of the absorption of the shavings of a sacred plant named Iboga, along with special incantations. Commonly practiced in Gabon, Bwiti is both a lifestyle and a belief

Tourism in Ogooué-Maritime

Tourism very promising

The tourism activity there involves ecotourism thanks to the natural national parks (small and the big Loango) in the three departments composing the province, including the private Port-Gentil animal park (the Ranch) which is open to the public. The Sport fishing is practiced in the three departments is about the large Tarpon found only in Costa Rica, the Barracuda, Grouper, red, etc.

Insofar as the large animal species met in the forests of the three departments are protected (crocodiles, elephants, leatherback turtles), tourists can content themselves with the safari photo sessions organized there.


NOT TO MISS OUT

The existence of the pilgrimage for the mission of Sainte Anne in the FernanVaz. It is built next to the village named Ondimba on the Nkomi lagoon in 1887 by a french missionary, father Bichet.
